Hunt TestsThis is a featured page

Hunt Tests are a very fun activity to do with your Dog. If your are a beginner, you may want to start with some good reading. Please remember to always keep the training FUN ! This comes pretty natural for your retriever/pointer/spaniel, all you have to do if direct it and enforce basic Obedience. I've been told that basic Hunt Training is easy. Once your dog knows that, Hunt Test training should be just as. If you would like more Information, please visit the links provided below.

There are a total of 3 Types of AKC Hunt Tests, please click to learn more about each one.

1) AKC Spaniel Hunt Tests - Chapter 1, Section 4 of the Spaniel Hunting Test Rules states the following:
"Such Tests shall be open to all AKC registrable breeds of Flushing Spaniels and Flushing Spaniels eligible to compete in the conformation Miscellaneous Class six months of age or over on the first day of the event.

Flushing spaniel breeds that have been granted Indefinite Listing Privileges (ILPs) are eligible to participate in hunting tests."
Flushing dogs are expected to search for feathered game within gunshot range of the hunter. When game is located, they must flush the bird into the air and retrieve it on command if it is shot. Click Here to see the Eligible Breeds.

2) AKC Retriever Hunt Tests - Chapter 1, Section 4 of the Regulations & Guidelines for AKC® Hunting Tests for Retrievers states the following regarding entry requirements.
"Hunting tests shall be open to dogs six months of age or over in all eligible breeds: Chesapeake Retriever, Curly-Coated Retriever, Flat-Coated Retriever, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel, Standard Poodle and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, except that a specialty club formed for any one of the eligible breeds may be approved to hold a Hunting Test in which only that breed may participate.

When a specialty club elects to restrict entry to its own breed, the premium list must specify that the event is open only to that breed.

Dogs of an AKC-registrable retriever breed, Irish Water Spaniels, Standard Poodles, and the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, that have been granted Purebred Alternative Listings/Indefinite Listing Privileges (PAL's/ILP's) are eligible to participate in Hunting Tests.

A dog is not eligible to be entered or run in any licensed or member club Hunting Test in any category if the dog has on two occasions been made the subject of the following report: If a dog, while under judgment at an AKC licensed or member club Hunting Test attacks another dog, and if the Judges are unanimously of the opinion that such attack was without reasonable cause, the Judges shall identify the offending dog on the judging sheet or in the Official Catalog and the name of the offending dog shall be listed in the report of the Hunting Test sent to The American Kennel Club.

Dogs listed in AKC's Miscellaneous Class that have been designated as retrievers are eligible to participate in Hunting Tests." For more information, please read the Regulations & Guidelines for AKC® Hunting Tests for Retrievers.

3) AKC Pointer Hunt Tests - Eligible Breeds : Brittany - Named for the French province in which it originated, the Brittany was, until September 1982, registered by the American Kennel Club as the Brittany Spaniel. Although until then called a spaniel, in its manner of working game the Brittany is setterlike. In appearance it is smaller than the setters but leggier than the spaniels, with a short tail and a characteristic high ear set. Please See to the AKC Pointer Hunt Test Page to see Other Breeds Eligible to Compete.
